The MV-UPS is GE Vernova’s power stability platform designed for the unique demands of AI-scale data centers. By integrating advanced, true medium-voltage power conversion with robust energy storage, the system creates a stable electrical island, a private grid, for your load, effectively decoupling critical operations from grid instability. This architectural innovation ensures that your processes are shielded from external disturbances, allowing for continuous, reliable, and efficient operation in an increasingly complex energy landscape.

MV-UPS: Medium Voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply

The MV-UPS is GE Vernova’s power stability platform designed for the unique demands of AI-scale data centers. By integrating advanced, true medium-voltage power conversion with robust energy storage, the system creates a stable electrical island, a private grid, for your load, effectively decoupling critical operations from grid instability. This architectural innovation ensures that your processes are shielded from external disturbances, allowing for continuous, reliable, and efficient operation in an increasingly complex energy landscape.

Industry Challenges

AI-scale data centers face an unprecedented challenge: power demand is growing faster than grid infrastructure can be reinforced. These high-density compute environments exhibit highly dynamic load profiles, characterized by sharp, sub-second ramp rates and frequent power swings that stress transmission and distribution networks.

In modern AI operations, compute demand can fluctuate dramatically within seconds. These rapid variations cause localized voltage instability, degraded power quality, and heightened sensitivity to external grid disturbances. As grid operators enforce stricter connection requirements – including rigid ride-through, ramp-rate, and power-quality constraints – data center operators face rising risks of curtailment, regulatory penalties, and costly unplanned downtime. In this environment, maintaining a stable, decoupled power interface is a critical business imperative for protecting compute availability and ensuring the profitability of AI-scale deployments.

GE Vernova Solution

The MV-UPS addresses these challenges by acting as a high-speed, intelligent buffer between the utility grid and critical equipment. By using a medium-voltage interface, the system avoids the limitations of traditional low-voltage power distribution, providing 100% decoupling between grid dynamics and load dynamics. It acts as a protection for the entire power chain, ensuring that even under severe grid conditions, downstream AI workloads remain unaffected.

The system intelligently balances grid input and load demand, injecting or absorbing energy as needed. By utilizing a dedicated grid converter, it provides full reactive power capability and complete fault ride-through protection. This means that while the utility network may fluctuate, your IT operations remain locked at a stable voltage and frequency.

Furthermore, the MV-UPS transforms the facility into a flexible energy asset, enabling the monetization of battery capacity through ancillary services like demand response and frequency support, which turn your energy storage into a revenue-generating component of your data center.

  • Grid and infrastructure protection: Shields expensive equipment – such as gas turbines – from the extreme torsional stress of "violent" AI-driven load swings.
  • Streamlined CAPEX and OPEX: Its comprehensive architecture can eliminate the need for secondary, low-voltage Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and traditional LV UPS systems, greatly reducing total installation and maintenance costs.
  • Simplified architecture: Minimizes power distribution complexity, resulting in smaller busbars, reduced breaker requirements, and lower switchgear, transformer, power supply unit ratings, and smaller near-rack battery backup units.
  • Superior control bandwidth: Offers industry-leading response times to fast ramp rates, ensuring that sensitive IT hardware is never exposed to voltage transients.
  • Market monetization: Unlocks the ability to participate in ancillary services markets, turning your energy storage into a revenue-generating asset.
  • Proven innovation & reliability: Our Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) subsystem is built on multiple generations of deployment in the most demanding industrial environments. Because Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) present workload profiles remarkably similar to the rapid-load fluctuations of AI training (as confirmed by NERC), our technology is battle-tested to handle mission-critical AI-scale applications.

How does the MV-UPS compare to traditional BESS shunt-connected systems?

Traditional BESS shunt systems cannot provide 100% decoupling, because they are connected in parallel with the load. The GE Vernova MV-UPS is a series-connected solution that provides total isolation between grid and load dynamics. This means that if a fault occurs on the grid side, your critical loads are completely shielded by the DC bus, a level of protection shunt systems physically cannot guarantee.

Will the MV-UPS footprint actually save me space on my site?

Yes, by integrating medium-voltage conversion and energy storage, the system removes the need for large, redundant low-voltage UPS systems and their associated switchgear. This significantly simplifies the downstream electrical distribution, allowing you to reclaim valuable square footage that would otherwise be dedicated to LV equipment. In high-density AI data centers, this footprint recovery directly translates to more rack space and higher revenue-generating capacity.

How early in my project planning do I need to decide on the MV-UPS?

It is critical to integrate the MV-UPS concept during the "Concept and Planning" (Phase 1) stage. Because the system handles medium voltage directly, it replaces large portions of the conventional electrical distribution architecture. Too late of MV-UPS consideration may find that the physical footprint or infrastructure requirements for the MV-UPS were not accounted for, making retrofitting difficult or impossible.

Does this system truly protect my gas turbine equipment from AI load swings?

AI-driven workloads create "violent" load swings (20% to 80% of multi-hundred MW) that can cause significant torsional stress on turbines. Unlike standard systems that pass some of this stress through to the generator, the MV-UPS absorbs these rapid fluctuations entirely. By providing a stable, grid-forming output, the MV-UPS ensures the turbine sees a controlled, predictable load, preventing accelerated wear and potential failure.
