Overview

Electrification has a range of electric ship technologies to provide a reliable, integrated power and propulsion solution. From smaller support vessels to the largest crane ships, and the latest cruise ships and tankers, solutions include integrated electric drive or hybrid-electric systems. Both are enablers of improving energy efficiency and decarbonization on our customers’ fleets and helping to comply with the latest energy-efficiency regulations and reporting.

Electrification ’s electric propulsion systems on-board electric power supplies and networks, energy management, automation, control, dynamic positioning and digital technologies work together seamlessly to supply a ship’s full power requirements, including energy-efficient propulsion, service loads and energy-intense operating systems

  • Both low voltage (LV) and higher, MV architectures, optimized for space and efficiency
  • 1-40MW systems (scalable to 120MW)
  • Safe and resilient
  • Easy to configure, install, commission and maintain
  • Deep understanding of marine applications and class standards, including cyber security and ice-class operation

Marine electric power & propulsion
  • Ship’s Electric Grid is hugely versatile, just as suited to smaller ships as the biggest transport and deep water offshore vessels.
  • Simplicity and flexibility from being able to combine power for propulsion and on-board equipment in one connected system.
  • Electric and podded propulsion meets the needs of high maneuverability and thrust requirements, with up to 10%fuel-efficiency improvements.
  • Ideal to help future-proof growing power demands across the ship’s life, e.g. to accommodate new operational equipment.
  • Best solution to ‘plug-in’ future power technologies and fuels, for example a mix of clean energy sources.

Hybrid electric solutions
  • Cost-effective choice for vessels with lower, but variable energy demands for on-board systems.
  • Able to retain conventional mechanical drive configuration, but supplement available energy and help to reduce emissions.
  • Power take-off / power take-in (PTO/PTI) shaft generators are ideal for space-constrained applications, diverting excess main engine power to ships’ service loads.

A range of other hybrid configurations is available. Find out more in our Energy Efficiency & Decarbonization solutions.

  • Powerful but efficient induction motors and generators compact, advanced permanent magnet machines (APMM) up to 13.8kV.
  • Power electronics with advanced IGBT technology, offering high power density, reliability, availability and power scalability for voltages up to 13.8kV and output frequency up to 300 Hz. Inputs 50 or 60 Hz ±5%P.
  • Integrated podded propulsion systems for ice-class operation.
  • Noise and vibration optimization.
  • Vessel control, power management, power distribution and dynamic positioning systems with advanced, secure software and control technologies
